i need a new light for my 180 gallon acrylic tank and i would like to know whats the best wattage/bulbs etc..i'm going to make a custom one from scratch..so all the advice to get the best quality lighting will help..

Go to http://www.ahsupply.com/ and get a 2x55 watt kit. Plenty of light for your tank. Hint: I like the 7800k bulbs on that kit. :D I can show you what they look like on a 240 gal. the first of next week. I'm repairing a leaky bulkhead on it this weekend, and putting my growout monos in it.

Also the new led's look really good and decent price if you buy a kit..

that would be awsome if you can post pics when u can..i'll go check that website now..

Bassinmike, thought I would give you an early peek. I haven't used this tank in quite a while, man what a mess! I'm having to redo everything. Anyway, here's how much light the 2x55 watt AH light kit puts out hung 6" above a 30" deep tank. Keep in mind there is no water in it yet, (I'm still putting the plumbing back together), but you can see there is plenty of light.

i just got on lunch at my work..that tank looks awsome (in the making of course)..i love the lighting..my tank will be sure to brighten up..how did you get your driftwood to stay like that? my big mono kicks everything out the way so its hard to keep driftwood/plants etc in one spot..thanks for posting that pic..lookin forward to seeing it once you have it all done..

The driftwood is screwed to 1/4" thick hardwood, and hung on the tank's bracing. Old trick, looks like tree roots hanging down in the water. If you don't let them touch the bottom, debris can't get caught under them.

i want to try something like that on my tank..my tank is acrylic and all solid..i added the sand just a little bit ago to my tank..it really brightened up my tank..i cant wait to get the new lighting up and see it shine..any tips about building the frame for the lighting?

The frame you see above was thrown together in a few minutes early this morning out of salvaged 1"x4"s, cut to length, and fastened with a finish nailer. :D 72" long, by 4" wide. I just made a simple box, and screwed the reflectors to the inside, evenly spaced apart. I swiped the light kit from another fixture I had ran previously on another tank.
