He's 16 inches and in a growout tank at my work. What should I use to catch him? How much water should I put in the rubbermaid container and do I need an airstone for a 20 minute drive home? How long should I drip acclimate? What about feeding before and after the move? Sorry for the questions, I don't want anything bad happening to my aro. I love this guy.:) Thanks.

Haha as i said use a tranquilizer or if you dont have access to one, use low lighting, drain the tank down put a large bag in the tank and make the fish swim into it ever so gently :)

Try to use a pilow case. A lot of people on mfk used a pilow case to move there arowanas I moved my pacu real easy(all my fish actually). Only hard part was trying to get him on there lol. I wouldnt think you would need a air pump for a 20min drive. But you can if you want to.

hey noel.. pillow case or large aquarium clear plastic bags(double bag) should be fine.. reduce the water and slowly guide the fish in.. you def have to expect some sort of leaping.. prob you could do it on a sunday cos you might have less traffic and could get home quicker than a 20 min drive???? just make sure your new tank is all set and ready.. cycled.. with temp around 24C .. i hope there is no decor or tankmates.. i'm sure others will chip in on the drip acclim. method.. i've generally let them float for a bit and released them.. don't feed a day(or two) prior to moving.. the aro might not eat post moving so just give it some time to get used to the new tank.. diffused lighting and the general precautions one would follow for any aro.. tight tank top.. plenty of air.. not too much strong water current etc.. all the best with the move mate.. cheers...

Thanks. By using a pillowcase or plastic bag, do I guide it inside or on it like a hammock and gently scoop it up? Kaya, it has tankmates. Do you suggest moving them together or the aro first? My aro is kinda laid back even with tankmates. I hope it doesn't get skittish after the move.

Guide it in mate.. basically double bag clear plastic aquarium bags.. lower the water so it cant leap.. think of it as using the plastic bag like a net.. i hope that gives you an idea.. i found this video on youtube.. maybe this might also work..

another one but i havent had a look at the entire video.. same principle.. two thicker bags but reduce the water level.. thats a must..

the tankmates are the same as in the earlier tank right??? or prob take turns.. release the aro first and the tank mates prob after a week once the aro has settled..

Yes, they are old tankmates. I will follow your advice, thanks everyone.

I have moved a 20" aro couple of times before. Fish bags are too small for 16" aro. I recommend using 33g black contractor garbage bags from Home Depot... the 3mm thick kind, using this kind of bag you will only need to use 1 bag. Use a powerhead to drain as much water from tank but enough that the fish can still swim. Guide the fish into the bag. The bag might have too much water in for you to carry the bag out because of trying to get the fish into the bag... have a cup or bowl ready to scoop water out to lighten the load. Tie or rubber band the bag, then place the fish into Rubbermaid tub. I usually just release the fish without dripping or anything... If your fish is healthy it should have no problem.
