san diego
I found my dogs gnawing on this poor guy in my back yard today.I am pretty sure its a turtle because of the webbed feet but his color is horrible.I live in the foothills around san diego so I doubt that it is a native species.I thought maybe a box turtle but he is the size of a football and I have never seen a box turtle this big.I need to know what it is so I can give him the right care.

Looks like a very sick or dirty red eared slider turtle. Be easier to identify if we could see his whole head.

P.S. did you try to see if the turtle would move in water? Seems like he/she is very dried up for a turtle..

id say a slider, he looks pretty dry stick him in some declorinated water in like a tub or big bucket, are u keeping him or just taking it till someone gets him? feed him some garden worms or flies or any insect really.

It is much happier in the water. came out of his shell and is swimming like a slider. It is probably a slider but it is very pale.I think it has been out a while. There is no water in my yard and it is fenced on all sides.I have no idea how it got there.Does anybody want him? He's FREE!!!!

Good to hear it isn't dead, even if it is pale. Goodluck with him/her.

its pretty big. It's probably a female. It's probably pretty old.It has dry skin falling off of it now and it has a little more color. We will see what happens

He is a old male slider probably a melanistic one:headbang2 I would pay for have him in my colection but too far away:D Dont release him as he is not native from your area. For now try to setle him down in a temporary home like a large plastic conteinar filled with water and see if he eats something. Chicken and trout are good starters. Then if you want to have him build him a nice outdoor pond or a big tank. If not put a ad on kingsnake Im sure somebody wants him. Look at the pink on its belly its a pretty turtle and a very unusual one for that matter. You can make some bucks for it:naughty:
