Hi all
i wanna know

i hear rumors that asian aros are shipped out infertile by hormone exposure or something

is this true?
or is this a rumour.

If you order a bunch of asian aros from reputable farms in asia - can you breed them in theory or are they all rendered infertile to protect their animals price?

Hmmmm..........

Firts time I hear that. I do not believe in it for one second.

interesting...let us hear more if you hear more and get the facts...

hey david r.
well actually, part of my 10 year plan is to have a lifestyle block -
here i will have a smal green house, like how they breed turtles here and i will dig a pond and try to breed silver arowanas wich i hear is relatively easier as people hvae done it in tanks - i have seen this with my own eyes.
and maybe one day just breed asian arowanas and see how i go.
if not then ihave a nice green house with a pond with nice arowanas:D

lol
just a thought, im pretty eccentric i think lol

no, this should not be true. it would be illegal to produce an endangered fish under cites law and then make it sterile before sale. theres a number of reasons why they would not need to do this as they are hard to breed and then average owners would not be able to breed them anyways for they would not know the reasons that they do not breed easily in a house tank. it would be possible to breed them in a set up like you say but that would be determined by whether you knew what environment makes the hormones trigger thier breeding. from what i have researched around the place no one knows or atleast those that do or should know just dont say. its still not like everyone will be able to acheive it anyway so if some farms do practise making fish infertile it would be an extra cost that is rather uneccesary and illegal to practise.

also here in oz a few years back there were rumours of goldfish being made infertile so we would not breed them. well it turned out for the fish i bought it was that they were not in breeding condition, be it they had spawned, had been stressed, were not in the right temps or had not been fed well. i had seen some fo them spawn in the shops and boguht some and got them to spawn the next year. so much for the rumours. back then it was supposed to be exposure to a certain wavelenght of light. but ive never heard of it since. even if one does it does not mean all farms do it. it would certainly make it harder for arowana farms to purchas untainted stock also so i highly doubt it goes on at all. probably a rumour perpetuated by those that can see not many people can breed them or those that have tried with no success.
get your water the same as the farm or area they come from naturally, feed them up, and buy about ten of them and you would have a good chance, depending on where you live.
