I am new to fish keeping, I never kept a pet before, not even a cat or dog, but I love fish, they make me feel calm. I am willing to start my aquarium and I was thinking of getting sea water aquarium but was advised to start with fresh water fish because I am a beginner. My local pet store owner told me to start with BIG FRESH WATER FISH because they can cope with me as a novice better than small ones.
My question is, is that true ? And if it is, what fish would you recommend ?

I have a fresh water tank, 70cm X 40cm X 40cm equipped with a filter and everything, now I need the fish.
I was thinking of :
2- 4” tiger
2- 5” silver arawana
2- 3” Severum
And maybe a gouramis or oscars
I am open to any suggestions and i'm interested in hearing about your experience.

The tank you have is far too small for these fish. I would suggest starting with small hardy fish rather than large fish, especially with the size tank you have.
I would advise doing as much research as possible prior to purchasing any fish. Filtration is the heart of any aquarium, and therefore you should start your research with understanding the various aspects and types of filtration.

The fish will grow to be far too large for a 29G aquarium. Even at less than 5" the tank would probably be overcrowded. A 29G would be perfect for 5 (max) cichlids though, in my opinion. I would suggest Africans, as my experience with them has been without trouble.

Start of with smaller fishes like guppies, mollies and danios first. Once you gotten the hang of it, start upgrading. Thats how I do it, and it has work for me so far. 5g -> Betta. 10g -> A shoal of mollies. 70g -> Bichirs.

You would need a VERY large tank to house these

2- 5” silver arawana
2- 3”
Severum
oscars

Since you're new start somewhat EASY....maybe a Tropical tank. Cardinal tetras, neons, Angels, a pleco (not common) JUST don't go grabbing for the MONSTERS yet.

I agree with Jason here. Start with some hardy smaller freshwater fish. Once you have the tank running right and the fish are doing well you will still get a lot of enjoyment out of it. And you can have more fish per tank if you get smaller fish. Get some fish that stay at the bottom, some mid layer fish and some top layer fish and you will see a great community of fish and many of them will have their own personalities. I love watching my 20 gallon with about a dozen small fish in it.

All fish tanks need water changes every so often Anywhere from 20-50% water changes are recommended either every week or two. With freshwater fish you can let it go another week usually and you will be fine. But with saltwater when it's time to do the water change you need to do the water change. No putting it off for another week because you aren't home or don't feel like it. Saltwater tanks take a lot more care and can cost double to quadruple the overall cost. There's a lot of extra equipment, testing, etc, that goes into it.

So I'd recommend looking at a good freshwater community tank or a semi-aggressive tank with a few prized fish. Then keep that up for a few months and see how you do. After you can keep that tank going for a while and you decide you have the space, time, and money for another tank then you could look into a saltwater tank.

Good luck.
