Brief Rundown:

90g Tank 78 deg.
10x filtration rate
Sand bottom
(1 male) Carpintis = 8" / (1 female) Trimac 5-6"

My question is 2 part and relatively simple.

1. To limit aggression, do people prefer a divider which she can pass through but not him? Or a Piece of PVC which she can fit and not him.
2. Should any special precautions be made tank wise? Temp? Beefier Substrate? Slate Pieces? A glossy flower pot vs a terracotta one? Less/different lighting?

* I should say I didnt want to encourage hybrid fish, but it appears I'm at one heck of a cross roads. My Trimac tries to kill anything her size unless it's a male. However, now of course the male isn't too keen on her. Figures.

I thank anyone in advance, I love my trimac I've had her for almost a year, she's a true F-0 Wild Tri, and nasty, well until I've tried to get her a lifelong tankmate. She always has been hyper aggressive, anything within 1 inch or so of her was blasted. I tested my waters with a male zonatus, who did pair with her. For about 2 weeks But she wouldn't spawn and he almost killed her, so I traded him for a smaller male Texas which I thought would be less of an issue. Both fish are IMO very good qualitty, from color, shape and structure to their personality. I Don't want to give the Texas up ideally, but a Wild Trimac isn't nearly as common as a Texas so at the end of the day she's here to stay.

I agree with ecoli, if you really have an F0 trimac, it would be a shame to contaminate, what could be real trimac fry, with an already over populated sea of hybrids. Finding true trimacs these days is getting more and more difficult, whereas the glut of hybrids seem to be a dime a dozen.

Well here's the deal I simply cannot fit a 6' tank anywhere. Im not gonna say I've got a 125 in the works blah blah blah, because I just cant fit it =( I doubt I can keep a trimac pair in a 90g right? My only thought if Got the male around her size, would he grow less or slower based on breeding, and exerting his efforts on being a parent then just growing as fast as possible. I've read people mentioning about the pheromones and stuff cause more/less growing. i.e a stocked tank fish grow slower but one amphilophus solo grows quicker persay. Just stuff I've read, I don't know how true it all is.

I just dont know if a 12 male or so could handle having a mate in a 90g. Granted I dont know if it would get that big. But I figured at the time a Texas isn't going to get to much bigger. I didn't want to breed them either, but he wont leave her alone so I hoped pairing up would fix it. I wish I had more space but I live on the lake, my house is literally 20 feet from the water so we sacrificed some space for waterfront. Any other ideas?

Here She is, she doesn't look like your average fish shop trimac.

Wonderful fish!

Frankly, in a 90 gallon, a trimac is a wetpet.

If you really want a breeding project in 90 gallon, it may work if you permanently do a tank divider AND keep the water really clean.

or try a smaller fish to breed.

Water front vs 6 ft of tank...hmmm...I have to think about that one :)

I had a 110 when I started out and had a wonderful community of CA cichlids...until came one midas and he systematically destroyed his tank mates one by one no matter what I did.

Was a young man of 21 at that time(and little or no internet) and that lesson always stuck.

I have a 110 tall also with a Red Tiger Mota Solo in it. weird size 36x24x30 craigslist for the win! but hey it fitsin my house =)
