i currently have a 125 gallon cichlid set up. stocking is as follows:
1x10" channel cat
1x3" red tail botia
2x5" "blue whale" fish
1x2.5" albino oscar
1x5" jack dempsey
1x8" common pleco
1x4" common pleco
1x1.5" common pleco
2x5" convict (males)
2x3" convict ( females)
male and female con have about 50 fry at 2 weeks old
also 3 guppies that have been alive for quite some time

now my set up now is with cruhed coral substrate
fake plants
lava rock
and smooth rock

my goal is to have more of a natural look. i would like to have a more natural look, i want to include drift wood and many more smooth rocks.
my concern is filtration, i maintain bi-weekly water changes but would like ideas for a sump. my only filtration currently is a ac110.
i have seen people mix tahitian moon sand ( the black and lighter color?) i would like advice as to how much sand i would need and at what ratio to mix it to get that nice mixed color. also please help with ideas for filtration. thank you in advance. -daniel.

p.s. i know its a lot but after having this set up for abot a month and a half im getting bored of it and i'm growing on tanks maintained by jk47.

thanks again.

That's a whole a lot of fish and not a whole lot of filtration. What are you water paremeters. Are you wanting more HOB, canisters, sump or does it not matter?

What are your water parameters? With a substrate of crushed coral I would guess your ph is through the roof. If I were you I would get rid of 2 of those plecos, either the male of female cons,(unless you want more babies ever couple of weeks) the channel catfish, (if will out grow that 125 very soon) and the guppies will be eaten by the Oscar in short time, and for the fry I am surprised the Oscar and the jack haven't eaten them by now. I am not trying to pick on you just trying to steer you in the right direction. If you want to do a sump i would look on craigslist for a 55 or 75 and make you own. Here is a like to a diy sump . With the fish that you currently have along with the filtration I would suggest you do two 50% water changes a week. I have never used the sand I believe i read some where it was 50/50.

i recently got rid of the non breeding convict pair and 2 plecos. yes i am going for a sump so i will follow that thread. im in the process of getting rid of the channel cat. what would you suggest i sell it for? or just give it away?

I am sure you can find a fellow MFKer that has a pond or huge tank that would give it great home.

i posted it, if someone has something to trade that will be cool, but im willing to give it away, it just ate my baby silver aro when i placed it in the 125 from its 75 for a few minutes to do a water change... :(
