Hey, I went to my lfs, and there were a few very small corn snakes, very cute! They were about 8 or 9 inches, and very very thin. There were also some garter snakes about the same size. Corn snakes were 30 bucks I think, and 20 for the garters.

I went to the other lfs, and there was a corn snake that was a bit larget, and 20 bucks; but I examined it closely, and it had these little brown tick things on it, so maybe I shouldn't get that one. I managed to resist the impulse to buy one immediately...So, should I get one? How long to garter snakes grow, and what would I feed such small snakes?

I have a 20g long, but it was meant for water turtles so on a side, there is a gap for a filter. If I somehow cover this up, and get a top, will this suffice for a garter or a corn snake?
Thanks for your input everybody....very excited to try a snake. :)

Personally, I would get out a drill or a dremel and buy one of those rubbermaids that only cost $5-$10 dollars. Just drill 1/8" holes in them for ventilation and place your stuff inside. If the humidity is too high over the heat source, then just drill more holes.

However that is just me. Make sure when you are using a tank, make it secure.

Oh, that's not a bad idea. I should go see just how big they are. So, what can I feed to such a small snake? Also, how fast do they grow?

Good rule of thum I think for colubrid is double the first year and triple the second year. However it is not an absolute though. For a hatchling, they can be fed pinkies, but it really depend on the girth.

You cooooooould use a soldering iron, but the fumes associated with it is dangerous and not healthy for anyone.

Wow, how can they eat pinkies? Their head is like an inch long. Will they take crickets?
