Okay so this is my first k1 media in my sump. As the k1 media sink it get stuck to the bottom under the wall layer. i was wondering what is the best way to prevent that from happening

Move in via placing air directly underneath, flow from a powerhead or equivalent, or put a screen in front that diffuses (spreads out) the flow through that section. That section has considerable more flow than other areas due to the surface area of the chamber only being open for a small cross section. Make that larger via a screen like I mention above or just leave it. If it isn't restricting flow it's not a functional issue it is only cosmetic.

I was thinking of putting a big square sponge filter at the bottom. would that work too?

It should help. I would think the density of the sponge will choke the flow though. Make sure it's a course (low density) type sponge if block the full length of the opening.
