ok I am looking into getting some angles and trying to breed them but i have a few questions...

1. Is there anyway to sex them??? If so how???

2.what size tank do they need for breeding???

3. How do I find a pair???

4.Do they need any thing special to lay eggs on(line smooth rock, clay pot, etc...)???

5. How often do they lay eggs???

6. How many eggs on average do they lay?????

7.Anything else u can tell me about breeding angels????

Thx to any1 and every1 who answers any or all of my questions :)

right my dad was very successful in breading angles so good that he used to supply my mates shop used to always have 200 fish survive from a spawning. This was his method he used to get 4-5 angles from different shops or from friends in a 3 ft a fully grown pair of Angels with 200-300 fry to herd around would be pretty cramped in anything smaller. A peace of slate is propped up either end. then he had to wait to see who paired up he would then whip the other fish out and these would pair for life.sure way to acquire a true breeding pair of Angelfish is to purchase a proven pair from a breeder dear but only need 2 not 5 Hatching should occur in about 36 to 48 hours depending on the temperature the ones my dad had were always good parents the first spawning could be a little hit or miss but after that no problems. When they hatched we fed them on diet of newly hatched Brine shrimp for 4 weeks 2- 3 times a day then chopped Tubifex chopped fine with a scalpel and crushed flake. will get back to you abbot PH etc when I get hold of my dad.

They do best with temperatures between 78-82F also don't mined hard water and with pH's ranging upwards of 6.8 this once again is how my dad did it and I dare say there will be other ways and possible saying this is junk but I have seen it work time and time again hope this is a help but the book recomends Soft (0.6 to 1.2 dH), slightly acid (pH 6.5 to 6.9), successful breedings have occurred in pH 6.8.

Male angels have a bump on their head.Females heads are angular like a triangle no bump. They lay their eggs vertically, like on intake tubes, plants. And they like their water at 6.5.Check out my photo gallery.

Check my photo gallery.Page 7 9thpicture,(feeding time)The marbled angel on the left is a male. The marbled one and the gold one on the right are females. See the bump on his head?See how the females heads are more to a point?Thats how you tell the difference between the sexes. :D

1. Is there anyway to sex them??? If so how??? Better to wait till breeding, females have a larger papilla and males have a smaller papilla

2.what size tank do they need for breeding??? Atleast a 20 gallon

3. How do I find a pair??? Get around half a dozen young angels and then raise them, and see if any pair up.

4.Do they need any thing special to lay eggs on(line smooth rock, clay pot, etc...)??? Slate, but not always

5. How often do they lay eggs??? I believe ever 3 weeks after the first spawn, but I am not sure.

6. How many eggs on average do they lay????? For a heathy adult angel is 300-500 eggs.

7.Anything else u can tell me about breeding angels???? They can be very territorial and it takes a few hours for the spawn to be complete. And, they may eat fry on their first spawn. And you may need a 2nd tank for rearing fry.

Welcome.

Some male angels get the hump on the head and some of them don't

Here are a couple of males with the hump .

Here is a silver female with her mate . Notice no hump on this male .

Here is a shot I took of them a couple of weeks ago .

Not a very good picture . But here they are doing their thing about 3 months ago . Not to bad for 10 year old fish .

I used to use a piece of slate just as Stotty mentions . The heater tube and filter intake that they often choose is a bad place unless you turn them off .
The method Stotty used is about the same as I used to do when I used to raise them .
