if you'retrying to not spend money why buy a 300 start with a 125. unless you already have the 300. wise move going from reef to fresh.way less $$$. but don't you think you should have started with fresh FIRST? the fish are cheaper so it doen't hurt as bad when you mess up your first tank. but whatever.
for the lighing i would go with in candescent bulbs of some sort. maybe with a little actinic action going on.
(the actinic is just my thing, i like the way it makes my fish look. it's totally unecissary)

I don't mind spending money, It's just that reefs cost so much that I wanna relax and take it easy with the 300. I wasn't very good with freshwater tanks when I started to get into the aquarium hobby so I went right to saltwater. Reefs are very easy to take care of. You just need to do your research. I researched for 8 months before I even bought my first saltwater. Ok, back on track. I have come to the conclusion that I'm going to make my own wet/dry out of new 20 high that I have laying around and then run a XF5 canister filter and two penguin 350 power filters. I should have enough filtration.:D Now all I need to do is figure out what substrate to use and if I should get the bichir I've always wanted.:)

Ohh and I want to start with a 300 because a 125 won't be big enough for 3 tropical gars some dats and some peacock bass for two years. But thanx for the suggestion.:)

what kind of poly are you looking at?
i just moved my senegal from a pea gravel to a fine sand, and apart from having to constantly shake the sand off the live plants it's been the best move i've made with them. I would do black sand with a little larger gravel and some good rocks/driftwood.

I'm going to pick up 10 bags of Tahitian Moon Sand. It should be enought to cover the bottom of the tank. I never thought of mixing substrates but I think I'm just going to use the sand. Do you have any pics of your tank?
