My grandma's computer has a bug she can't shake. She has an up-to-date Macafee subscription that's supposed to keep her safe. Yesterday she spent 2 hours on the phone with a guy from Macafee who uninstalled whatever he needed to and got rid of the malady. Today, it's back. So she calls them back and now they want money to help her. She's running around in circles with these people, has been for almost another two hours, with three different people.

My question is: can we get rid of this our ourselves with a virus software that is obviously not doing what it's supposed to? Is there a way for us to circumvent whatever is wrong and fix the problem?

It's some adware thing called snap.do.com. It has taken over her homepage completely. She can't use her computer at all. It's a Dell desktop computer, 3 years old, with Windows 7.

Can anyone suggest a course of action? She just doesn't have the 180 dollars they want to fix the problem that never should have happened in the first place. Right now, we not recommend Macafee for virus protection software. :thumbsdow

I've used this and it works http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php If you can't use the computer at all You might be stuck unless you take it to Best Buy and let the Geeks have a look at it. I'm sure we have a few in house Geeks too so maybe they can help. As I side I never liked McAfee I always use Trend Micro and recomend it highly.

It's threads like this that make me really glad we have a Mac.

Once you go mac, you never go back ;-)

I've always been a fan of AdAware, although I use the pro version (works better) McAfee is useless. If you can't get rid of the adware yourselves and you don't want to pay anyone to do it you can always use your recovery disc to wipe the HD and reinstall windows. Make sure to backup your photos and docs and anything else you can't redownload.

MacAfee is like swiss cheese when it comes to viruses. Even microsoft's free one is better than it. AdAware and Malwarebytes are both free and are great at clearing out ad junk like that. You want to run them in conjunction with a virus program, because not all virus programs are designed to grab adware too.

If we plug in the external hard drive to run the backup, will the adware infect the HD? I'm not sure how that stuff works.... I hadn't thought of that though...it's so painfully obvious! Lol. We'll save this as a last resort.
