My wife wants to set up a tank for peacocks. What would be a good substrate? She wants something white. Will pool filter sand work, and how deep should it be?

Pool filter sand would work, as long as you make sure to clean it. An inch or less is good...so for a 55 gallon, about 50 lbs worked for me. Make sure you rinse it really well, to remove the dust, and make sure once it's in your tank, to mix it up on a fairly regular basis.

Good advice.

mix a bag of argonite with the sand to help buffer the water, and you should have more then a inch, i dont personally keep peacocks but if there anything like vics or mbuna they like to dig so a inch just wont cut it, 2 inches works for me

oh ya theres alot of rinsing but its worth it in the long run, and if you read the package it actually says for reef tanks and african cichlids

If I use more than an inch, it makes it too hard for me to stir. I figure they'll dig til they hit glass...then move to a new section. For me, there has to be a happy compromise between easily keeping my tanks, and keeping the fish happy. They get an inch and can redecorate at will.

Argonite is a battle for me...I have a hard time getting it clean enough to go into the tank. Seems to take twice or more as long to clean, so I don't care much for it, although I really like the look.
