hi guys i need ideas i have a tank that is 1800(L)600(W)650(H) with 2 cascade 1500 filters it house a mean flowerhorn
i want to sell the flowerhorn and get a few polypterus id like to know how many would you put in and what tankmates
Thanks in advance

Depends what species you like. You could keep up to a dozen smaller upper jaws easily, or a few lower jaws. Depends what sorts you like, then this dictates your tankmates as well. :)

im new to this so what smaller upper jaws are there and what lower jaws are there

OK, so 6 x 2 x 2...

Do any of the species appeal to you in particular?
What other fish appeal to you?

I love upper jaws, but personally if it were me I'd do lower jaws in a 6 foot tank. You'd see them better because they're generally larger, and they're extra prehistoric and impressive looking. They're not overly active, though. Part of it also depends on what species become available when.

Another thing to consider is that wild-caught fish generally tend to grow larger than captive bred.

Lower jaws:
Congicus
Endlicheri
Ansorgii
Lapradei
P. Bichir Bichir

But.... there are a ton of variations within each depending on catch location and individual fish. So you'll see someone talking about a Dabola Endli, Faranah Endli, etc.

Here are some photos of the various Endli and Lap variants.

I'm not sure how many lower jaws you could have in a 6 foot tank... part of that depends on how much you want to deal with water changes, and how many other types of fish you want. Someone else with LJ experience will chime in.

I personally am not a "poly carpet" fan so you'll always see me suggesting under-stocking vs. the opposite.

Id keep a combination of lower jaws and the big 3 upper jaw (weeksi, teugelsi and ornate) all the way.

Like magpie said it all depends on how much work you want to put in. Some people lightly stock where as other go on the heavier side. I have a 300gal/100 gal sump and because of the other large fish i cut the poly numbers down from 16ish to 7. Dont under estimate how impressive a 17 or 18 inch and fat/thick poly looks. I cant wait until i get some to pass the 20 inch mark

Id probably keep 5 total. Again it really depends on what your tastes are. Id probably do something like congicus, endlicheri, lapradei (koloton or koliba), ornate, and teugelsi
