my son is wanting an accoustic guitar for christmas. he thinks he already has everything he is getting, so i can't ask him about them. what should i look for? good brands, stores, prices? i am looking to stay in the 300 dollar range if that helps.
thanks jeff

There are many decent acoustic guitars that are in the 300 dollar range. Personally, I love the ovations because of the shape of the guitar neck and overall playability but it's not the average acoustic guitar. Either way you can always try out guitars first before you buy them. I highly recommend Guitar Center since it's literally my favorite store and I'm always there playing their guitars. They have a great amount of guitars to choose from and they have everything else you need. check out their website and their prices on acoustic guitars.

i'm going to guitar center this weekend. i need some advice before i go, since i am buying it for my son as a surprise, it's not like he can try it out first. i am looking at a couple of alvarez guitars, an ibanez, and an epiphone. all have solid tops, but other than that what should i be looking for?

overall sound and playability. You should test the guitars out first. Each acoustic guitar will feel somewhat different and some will sound better over the other. I don't recommend epiphone acoustic guitars btw. Unless you're willing to pay for a 500+ epiphone guitar. They don't feel as nice as the others.

I love my Takamine. It has a very deep sound, and costs less than $300.

i have a guitar for sale pm me if interetsed

i was looking at the epiphone hummingbird, guitar center has it marked down in the 300's, i'm not sure if it is a good deal or if the msrp is inflated to make it look like a good deal. i will look into the takamine.
thanks jeff

i love epiphone guitars! they have a really nice sound. although u can get other great guitar with $300. i love guitar center too.

I really like Ovations, but they are, for the most part, made to be plugged in (in other words, acoustic-electrics). Mine is a great playing guitar, but the unplugged sound just isn't as full as I'd like (it is a super-shallow body acoustic though-some of the larger bowl models probably have a better unplugged sound).
I really like the Epiphone Dove. When I have the money, I'd like to get a decent full-bodied acoustic for when I play unplugged (which is more often the case right now). I considered the Dove as well as some others. Takamines are on my list as well as Seagull. A guy I know just bought a higher end Seagull and it sounds great. I'd imagine the more affordable models sound very nice as well.

When you pick out a guitar for your son make sure that it has low enough action so that it will be easier to play. Action is the distance between the strings and the fretboard. You can check each guitar by pushing down on the strings to the fretboard, whichever guitar takes less effort to do this will be the easier guitar to play. Good luck!
