It could be that they are breeding. It could also just be a display of aggression. When you say "spit them out" you are referring to the breeding of African mouthbrooder cichlids. The fish you have are egg layers. If they are in fact breeding, you will know soon enough by the eggs. having eggs doesn't necessarily mean you will have fry. If after a few days of the eggs being laid, they turn fungus white...they weren't fertilized.

The egg tumbler is a mechanical devise for hatching the eggs of mouthbrooders. In essence all it does is keep water flowing over the eggs. I have hatched the eggs of egg layers by removing the spawning site and directing small current of water or a bubbler across the surface of the eggs. Same effect as the parents sitting over top redirecting current by moving their fins. No need to do this in your case. Just wait see. If you have eggs, wait for fry...no fry but fungus they weren't fertilized.

As for the disposition of the fry, that's up to you. There's a market for Red Texas. Just be sure to label them correctly so they don't mistakenly get circulated unknowingly into the hobby.

Good luck.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I am under the impression that the Red Texas that are currently very popular in the hobby and demand a high price tag are not simply Red Devil x Texas hybrids.

As far as what to expect if they are spawning, Mojo nailed it.

If you do get a batch of fry, I would simply let nature take its course. If you have other fish in the tank the fry will eventually become food/die. With some luck you may end up with a survivior or two.

Good luck and post some pics!

you coulld let nature take its course or you could pull the eggs after the male fertilizes them if your afraid they may eat them and put them in a 10 gallon tank with some methalene blue to prevent fungus. i like to use a sponge filter and as soon as the eggs start wiggling i take a small fish net and put some carbon in it then drape it over top of the sponge filter to remove the methalene blue.good luck hope they spawn for ya

I pull the eggs 90% of the time and put them in a 10 for the first few weeks. But make sure you use at least 75% of the water from the breeder tank

ok i have eggs not aton of them lol the covered these cichlid stones i bought with eggs i didnt think their would be so many how long does it take to tell f they were fertilized?

could take up to 3 days. ive had eggs stay clear until the 3rd day then turn white. so give it 2-3 days and you should know.

I usually don't get involved . . . I don't particularly want babies in my tanks, and I'm not sure what to do with 'em . . . right now my Texas hybrid and a pink convict are zealously guarding their fry, and I'm just keeping an eye on things
