I'm going to be going to college at the end of this year. I recently picked up an Mbu puffer, was extremely excited about getting him, and had plans to build a large enough enclosure to keep the little guy in (8x4x4ft), and been able to feed him and afford the proper filtration and everything. Unfortunately I just found out that the company that my mom works for is going to be locating to another state, and so she will be out of a job. I am most likely going to have to pay for just about all of college by myself now, and will definitely not be able to make the 8x4x4 foot plywood tank that I had been planning to build within the near future, or I'm almost certain not within the next 4 or 5 years. So I am unsure that I would be able to provide the Mbu with the home that I believe he deserves. So my question is, do you think that he would do alright in a 300 gallon tank (or possibly less )for the next 4 or 5 years or so? Or do you think that it wouldn't give him a good enough life, or even possibly kill him, and I should sell him to somebody who could provide him that type of enclosure, and just wait until I do have the money to provide the tank and the care that such a large growing puffer requires, before I buy another Mbu? I will be very sad if I do need to sell him, but to me, it is better than having him wind up like so many other people's Mbus (at least from what I have read about peoples' large Mbus either being unhappy and sickly, or dying from being in too cramped of a tank), who could not be provided adequate housing and maintenence.
(Also I am sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I have just been stressed about this lately, and would like the opinions of more experienced fishkeepers)
