I'm looking to get a ray for my tank. I'm looking for one of the smaller species like a male motoro, male marble, male MMxMotoro, retics, etc. My question is how will it work with my current stock? I have a fl gar, clown knife, and polypterus ornate in a 180 gallon tank with an fx5 filter. I know the rays might/will outgrow my tank but if I can't upgrade then I will rehome them.

Your stock should work I had problems with polys. how about a hystrix? They are hard to find but stay small!

i'm not really looking to drop a bunch of money on my first ray. since they are hard to find i assume they are very expensive? they are really cool though.

A vendor here was selling them at $55 if you bought two. I bought mine for $75 a couple years ago, they're not overly expensive when you can find them, and they stay small so not a bad choice for your size tank.

Find a retic or histrix or scobina thats already eating and in good condition. They all stay small but you'll prob still want to rehome eventually.

I've heard horror stories about rays being torn to shreds by gar.........the ray poo is the minor concern compared to the constant urine secretion (pure ammonia)......on the same size tank I run an fx5, 2 406's, a cascade 1000 and 2 aqueon hob for my 4 ray and others

rays are extremely messy and (in most cases) very intolerant of ammonia so that means frequent water changes. I do weekly 80% water changes on my ray tank
