ok i got a 90 gal. and a 120 gal. i do 50% water changes on each, roughly every week. my friend rob thinks that water changes are not important to do.(i'm startin to get ticked off @ him) he says doing them will not help your fish grow or improve color or health. they just make your tank look clean. he says he's gone for 2 years with out ever doing on. oh and nitrate levels don't matter. so help me make him realize he's WRONG LOL.. thanks

my mom has to remind me to change my water lol

A guy I work with has a VERY overstocked 75 (two JD's, two oscars, a couple random other cichlids, one 17 inch clown knife, four plecos and maybe one or two others- with most of his fish being at least 8 inches) and the guy says he has never done a water change since his water always stays clear...i have gone with common reasoning and also tried explaining the "science" behind water changes but nothing fazed him keep trying though you might get through to him one day

It's not their fault, it's just how they were raised. They cannot see the obviousness of waste build-up. They cannot connect clean water with healthy fish because the evidence is not strong enough for them. Their fish tolerate the poor conditions they are kept in, so nothing changes. As their generation dies off and the new educated generation matures, their methods will die with them. Just have a little patience.
