I bought 16 frontosa, 6 and 7 stripe. I recently found out they are diff. Can they breed together? And if so, what will there babies look like?

YES, they will interbreed. If they are still young then its ok to put them in the same tank. Once they reach breeding size (4" and up to be on the safe side) then you will need to separate them. Don't know what their frys will look like but it will not be worth much. People in this hobby do not like cross breeding of frontosas. The 7 stripe frontosa is a Kigoma variant, the 6 stripe is most likely a burundi variant. But will need pics of the 6 stripe frontosa to give you a better answer.....:grinno:
Please do not cross breed them.......:WHOA:

no do not cross breed them not worth anything then SEPERATE usually takes frontosa about 4 years to come of breeding age some a little sooner but most 4 years or later. be paitent takes time to get fronts to breed :grinno:

i have to find the article from davo that he had posted about breeding 7 and 6 stripe frontosa {depending on what type they are since fronts that are 6 stripe have many variations..but according to this article they can be bred together... and i will try and find it...http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70607 here it is.
http://www.springerlink.com/content/t7764440425431hm/fulltext.pdf original paper of text from Davo.. this is definitly something that needs further investigating...i agree we should not breed them together until we know for certain that these are the same.. more study needs to be done.

Pictures would be needed to properly ID what type/variant of cyphotilapia you have. Yes they can cross breed and no it is not suggested or a good idea to do it, cross breeds are looked down on.

if they really are different variants, it is much better if you keep them from breeding

knowing that you have 2 separate frontosa variants, it is not a good idea to cross breed them. That article does not change my mind on whether cross breeding is ok.....:grinno:

Im gonna wait a little bit, but i am goin to seperate them. I wont let them inetrbreed. Thanks for info allyou have lots of time before you need to separate them... they do not mature until about 4 years old..

You asked what the offspring would look like if they crossed. If they interbreed the offspring will likely have messed up stripes, some with 7 , some with 6, some with 6 on one side and 7 on the other (on the same fish ). The offspring of those fish would also likely pass along messed up stripes as well. That is why the interbreeding is not a good idea. Sounds like you got alot fronts though !!
