in my 55 right now i have two jack dempseys and an african knife. i have been having an algae problem the past few weeks and my two jd's dont seem very active. i have to be honest, at the moment i dont have anything to test my water, but i have been doing 30%-50% water changes about every three or for days, and for filtration i have two h.ob.s both rated for 60 gallons, one is filled with fluval bio rings and the other is the slandered setup, carbon and what i think is filter floss. i am tight on money right now, that is the only reason i dont have a test kit, i was using those strips but dont have any right now.

here is whats in my one h.o.b

one jd sits under this piece of drift wood all day, and just lays very still, and the other stays in the floating plants i have.

with the algae, i have a bottle of algae destroyer and followed the directions and it did not seem to help.
here are some picks of the algae, and even after i stir up the sand after every water change it still comes back, and its really bad on my intakes, i scrape it off every time i do a water change.

and this is the largest jd of the two

they dont really show signs of stress, i never see them all black or with black strips, some days there will swim around being very active, but most of the time they just lay around. i did have an angel fish and poly in the tank also, they were both very active, i thought those two were the cause for the jd's not being active so i gave them to a co-worker who put them both in a 125. but that was two weeks ago and still no improvment with the jd's.

would taking down one of my filters and cleaning it out very good help, and wait another month and clean the other one out. any help or advise would be great, im just worried about my fish.

Personally, I would stop using chemicals to treat algae. Invest in an algae eater of some sort (believe me the options are limitless), and add some dither fish. Dithers work wonders with bringing shy fish out of hiding. My indo dats used to be black 90% of the time when I had them in seperate tanks. When I threw them in my 180g loaded with smaller, active fish, they haven't turned black since. As for the filter debacle...leave it alone unless you're scheduled for tank maintenence.

Also, cut back on your photoperiod to 6-8 hours MAX if you haven't already.

Ditto no chemicals for algae. Water change, water change, water change!

What is your tank temperature?

Might need more aeration. Any problems with the knife? If not, probably just a "shyness" issue and dithers may help. Wouldn't add any new fish until you can get some testing supplies, though.

The temp is at 80. The knife does fine. Likes to hide some times but is very active. I do have a clown pleco in there.
