Hello, I'm new to this forum. I spent the last few hours browsing through the threads and are loving all your wonderful photos. :D

I registered because I need some help regarding 5 Oscars and a Bichir someone I know owns. They are all juveniles and live in a 55 gallon, oscars are around 3" and the bichir is 7". He is leaving for overseas soon and intends to dump them all into a reservoir. :irked: In the heat of the moment, I told him I'll take them all in.

Now, I have a 6' by 2.5' by 2' tank (approximately 200 gallon) housing one 7" arrowana. Filtration is a 3' by 2' by 2' sump tank (25% mechanical filtration, 50% bio-media and the remaining 25% empty at the moment). I'm pretty sure my set-up is not able to accommodate everyone. How much oscars can I comfortably house in my tank, along with the bichir? I know someone who can take in 2 oscars, leaving me with 3.

If I provide additional filtration (picking up an FX5 tomorrow) and more hiding spots, can I make an arrowana, 3 oscars and 1 bichir work in a 200g? I do not intend to change tanks anywhere in the near future (the arrowana was an unexpected rescue as well and I simply do not have the space) I'm also looking at planting the remaining 25% of the sump or setting a turf algae filter there to help reduce the nitrate level.

Also, I read that oscars are aggressive towards each other when mature, so is 3 too many to keep?

Cheers! :grinno:

I have never owned a Oscar, just from my reading the aggression can be hit or miss. Since the Oscars have been together for so long you might get away with housing 3. Only way is to try it, however, have a backup plan if you need to remove 1.

they might very well be aggressive with each other, especially if 2 pair off...I'd attempt it anyway, and in the meantime try to re-home the spare oscars
