im trying to build a sump, but i really dont want to drill a hole in my tank, is there another way? cant i just have my canister pull water out of the tank to the sump and then another canister pull the water out of the sump and back to the tank?

Unfortunately no...because if one filter or the other started running slower (clogging ect) then your sump would either run dry or overflow. You might be able to gravity feed h2o in, and then use a canister to pump water back. Thats a pretty cool concept actually.

I have never had a sump on one of my tanks, however I have helped some people, and my brother has sumped tanks. I also work with sumped tanks at work. So take what I say with a grain of salt. :D

external overflow....

i got mine from livereef.com and its great

then on the return pump put a ball valve and adjust the output so the overflow can keep up

If you dont want to drill your tank, pick up an external overflow that has a lift pump or line for a siphon to be connected to a power head. If it doesnt have that feature, there is a very good chance that your external overflow wont start the siphon back up when/if power goes out.

air type siphons are old school (like for example CPR CS50's and other models)

now its recomended to use a over flow with a 'U' tube.

the CPR ones (and simmilar) has problems with the pump- the hose to the pump would often get debree or a small amount of alage groth and the over flow would not start. so the sump/refugium would empty overflowing the main tank

Thats fine. I wont argue with you there. I have yet to find an HOB overflow that I actually like, thats why I decided to drill my tank. Its really not as hard as people make it out to be.

That aside, cheaping out on an hob overflow is not the way to go.

check out lifereef......

i was worried about flooding....

i have tested for poweroutages a million and one times by unplugging, leaving unpluged for a few then plugging back in and it has started everytime.

he sends very clear instructions with his products and if you need help you can call him and he will help. he doesnt just sell his products, he makes sure your happy with them also

what size tank do you have, and what size sump?

how many GPH do you want running through?

the tank is a 75 and the sump is gonna be a 10 gal......not sure how many gph, just whats necessary, ill look up one of these external overflows... thanks
