depends on what fish you want to keep

How much lightin do you have? I mean, how many watts per gallon? For plants..you need at least 2 watts per gallon if your really want them to flourish...any more than that and you need to start addin CO2 and other additives to keep up with the plant growth. There are some low light plants that will survive in 1 watt per gallon, but generally 2 watts per gallon is best. Having plants also effects what type of substrates you can have. Like, sand isn't exactly the best substrate for plants cuz its hard to keep them in it unless you have a lot of it in the tank...or weight them down. Easily uprooted in other words. Plus if you are gonna keep cichlids, plants aren't exactly your best choice for most cichlids since cichlids like to dig. Most peeps have driftwood, rocks, and some sort of aquarium substrate. Personally I love sand...its great and the fish like it. There are so many options out there. Just cruise the forum...there are tons of pictures of peeps tankz to observe.
