I think they are called ancient fish because they have been around for so long and havent experienced any major changes to their looks and size.
 
Yes, as opposed to more highly evolved fish like cichlids, primitive or ancient fish have remained unchanged for very long periods of time. In some cases, fossils have been found that are extremely similar to the fish that are alive today indicating very little change for millions of years
 
Many of the ones that I am familiar with share some common characteristics such as dense muscles, and a primitive air bladder that serves similar to a lung allowing them to "breathe" air in low oxygen conditions. You'll see fish like gars and poly's come to the surface and take a gulp of air quite often. I know there are members on here that could elaborate with much more detail the fascinating capabilities and adaptations of "ancient" fish.
