Ok folks, I am about to undertake a project over the next few days. I am going to make a Guide to ID and care for ATF v2.0. Looking back at the one that I originally made as linked in my signature, its clear that I wrote it in a far too academic manner and that I didn't include enough information that is directly pertinent to hobbyists for identification. Instead of fixing the old one, I intend to create a new article that will easier to read (in the vein of the Problems with ID thread) and will be much more comprehensive in detail for the husbandry of these fish.

What I would like is to use pictures of member's fishes. If you would like your pics to be included, please post them up with what kind of fish you believe it to be and the size of the fish. I would prefer clear pictures, but for obscure species like brevis I'll take what I can get. You will of course be credited for your picture. I will have many pictures of each species covered in their profile, not just 3-4 like I did in the current guide. I will also be using open source pictures under fair use.

I would love to hear feedback and see pics. Thanks guys!

Rob

cant wait till this is put togeather, im in need of stepping know how up. have quite an intrest in the gatf would love to learn what they take to house in detail

If you can, use a photo editing program to point out certain distinctions kinda like a diagram I think that will be great for visual learners like myself

I'll help get mass pictures of all the ATF I can get. Good luck IDing them all lol

Thanks man. I planed on having vectored images created to more clearly show the morphology that I'm attempting to discuss. It'll probably take me a couple of weeks of slow nights at work to finish this post, but it'll be worth it!

Please feel free to use any of the pics I've posted up already. I can give you the direct link to the photobucket folder where I keep all of them, that way you can pick and choose whatever photos you need/want. Your ID/guide threads are greatly appreciated, anything I can do to help, just let me know. If you want any pics of mine, you can grab them off my thread or just shoot me a PM and I'll give you the direct link to the photobucket folder.

The following pictures came from self posted pictures that people put up via Instagram each picture is allowed tags that has to do with that picture so that other people can find them.

I searched #tigerfish and a bunch of these tourists catching ATF came up. Each picture the owner also tagged the name of the river they were on. The rest of the photos I cropped.

For example:

The rest of these photos I found online through various forums.

I think I may have found a juvenile brevis that can be clearly identifiable. Looks to be a Goliath cause of the head shape but everything else I'm not so sure.

This one looks to be a Tanzaniae. Bluish adipose fin. Head and jaw shape doesn't look to be a vatf or fatf.

The jaw shape of this one points me towards a fatf. Maybe vatf?

Hope this helps with the guide! Correct me on my guesses if I'm wrong.

That is a very interesting fish. I don't think its a brevis, though I can certainly see why you might think that. A key diagnostic trait for brevis is that they're a lower lobe species, this guy has color on both lobes. I suspect this is an oddball vittatus complex member with a beat up face who is new to his tank and stressed and not showing colors well.

Agreed. TATF make some nice looking fish. I finally acquired a good picture of a big one in a tank that doesn't have the colors made all crazy from the flash like in that pic. Check this guy out!-

Definitively vittatus. Easy way to tell for sure: FATF has a lower lobe, VATF has both lobes colored.

FATF

Well done!

Can't wait!
