Normally I'm an info junkie, I like to read and read about anything new before I even get off the line and even think about purchases.

Before I start, my reptile experience is zero, hence the thread title but I thought for once I'd get some opinions before I started the research.

About 2 years ago me and wife went to buy some fish food from a guy who sold fish and all related products privately and they had 'lizards' which she held etc. I go into more detail but as mentioned above my experience is zero.

Ever since every time we go anywhere pet related the nagging starts, 'I want one' etc. and I brush it off as I could do without the new pet headache. The problem is I've cracked, she's bought me something very nice for xmas and I've got this tank lying around:

Before I start to research things I would like to know is it possible to keep some type of reptile(possibly gekos (now 1% of zero;)) in them because I'd still like it to be aquatic and thought of construsting a cheese wedge type design in the bottom where one end would be water and the rest would be land so to speak.

My questions are:

Anyone done this before?
Would everything be ok in such a small width of tank?
If it is possible to convert the tank how would I filter the water?
Any possible suggestions to reptiles that don't get too big which would suit?

Sorry, I hate posting without any knowledge of the subbject but I'd like to know before I could end up spending a few days reading up without an end product, should I stop now and rethink?

dude that tank is awesome and the cheese wedge design would be orgasmic to see in a tank like that!

but before we start zerging you with ideas do you want a handleable reptile?
do you only want geckos?
what do you think of frogs?
how about snakes?
how many would you want in the tank? (you could do a community of small lizards like anoles or day geckos)

maybe some newts/ salamanders, not the best for handling but their pretty cool ;)
and ya thats a pretty monster tank. And instead of having a cheese wedge why not have like on huge amphibian tank?

Wow, you guys are fast on the reptile forums

Honestly I think she would want to handle them, this is a surprise present idea so timing needs to be perfect and is so difficult, I have 2 days off a week that she doesn't so everything needs to be kept out of sight. It needs to be a reptile, like I said before my experience is zero, I need to research the whole heating and lighting before I even start. I would like to start with one reptile and maybe add to this in the future but would also like to have something waterbound as well

I don't know, I'm a total newbie at this sort of thing:nilly:

Is it really worth spending the time and effort on construction?

I know I'd need lights and heater etc. but could it be done?

snakes would include
ribbon snake
rat snakes (elaphe)
mud snakes
list goes on\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

lizards would include
crocodile skinks
baby water dragons
some sort of agamid
baby basilisks

-geckos arent big on water though

just remembered croc skinks are a great idea, maybe not the best for a "Newbie" but would do great in that kind of setup. And i agree geckos arent that crazy for water. You can always do frogs, but wasnt the whole point of this thread to get a lizard? Anyways if you did get a newt you would most likely not need a heater, depending on what kind you did get. Are more deserty animals out of the picture though? because i can see this being a leopard gecko or bearded dragon setup ;)

file snakes LOVE water but get big and are really hard to keep
