A terrible thing happened today and I need some fellow monster fish keepers to help me figure it out---please. I have 11 tanks up, all filled with different kinds of fish. About 6 months ago I needed more gravel so I went to a local landscaping yard and bought some. Washed it thoroughly and put it in 2 different community tanks. No Problems, all fish happy. Recently I decided I wanted more gravel in my 125. This is (was) a healthy established tank containing 3 full grown South American Cichlids, a pair of Midas and a female Red Devil. She was the bully but all 3 were generally happy. I went to the same landscaping yard, bought the same gravel, wash it thoroughly and put it in the tank. Everything was fine. I noticed about an hour later that they were listless another hour and the Devil was dead. I scooped up the 2 Midas and dumped them in my 100 gallon African Cichlid tank. I didn't know what else to do??!! That was about an hour ago, they are not dead yet but they DO NOT look good. I have been in this hobby for over 40 years and have never had anything like this happen before! Anyone? Any thoughts? Suggestions? Anything? ----this has totally blown my mind :(

I don't remember the name, I am going to call the place tomorrow (it's about 80 miles away). It's 'natural' looking, different shades of brown, tan, grey, etc., about 1/2 inch or less in diameter. Same stuff I have used before.

this is really sad to hear.. welcome to mfk.. i hope you post this in general Aquaria forum and get some answers.. i am so sorry for your loss

Suspect pesticides too, post in the general discussion. There is more traffic there

Sorry for your loss.
After you added the gravel and noticed the problem, did you take a water reading??? did you remove the old gravel or add too it?? maybe a spike. but if i had to guess i would say the rocks might have had chemical on them.
