While out walking I noticed that some fool left container of water with a turtle in it on the sidewalk earlier today. The outside temp is around 40degrees and although the turtle looks like a native,RES more than likely,it is in rough shape and probably would have died if left out there much longer. The turtle looks to be about three or four inches and one of it's eyes is either swollen shut or is covered with scar tissue.
Here are a few crappy android photos.I welcome any advice or tips...especially for treating the eye.20160102_114840.jpg

Poor red ear. Even its shell looks bad. Probably room temp water and a sulfa block wil help it feel better but the eye infection will need to be treated. We had a giant snapper when we were young with an eye infection the vet gave us an ointment for it if I remember correctly but I don't know what it was

C CDMay do you have any suggestions on what can be used to treat a RES with an eye infection.

nice save, looks to be in rough shape. you can buy eye drops from a lfs and treat the eye.
keep water clean and daily wc at temps around 80 while you treat the eye. make sure it has
a good basking spot with uvb and uva light. additional thing you can do is give it carrot juice/
puree bath for about 30 minutes a day/daily. feed it lots of kale and collard greens or other
vitamin a rich food source as theyre good for the eye and in most eye problem cases in
turtles its vitamin a deficiency. but its better to take it to a vet since the eye might need
shots for the eye to actually cure and get better if its related to resistant fungal/bacterial.

ive had people dump turtles on my front yard/lawn so many times its ridiculous...
and all of them in most cases were in horrible conditions & near death...

Thanks for the information Tomo....looks like I have a project on my hands here.
Red eareds catch bad breaks around here due to people selling the hatchlings during the spring and summer.I don't know where they get them from but it is not uncommon to see someone with either a table set up at a busy street corner or mobile with a pushcart loaded with them. They sell the little turtles complete wth small containers for about ten to twenty dollars and most of the people who buy them have no idea how to properly care for them.
