I rescued it...now what??

Petsmart has Frontosa now. This is a good and bad thing. I like the fact that I can find one for less than $50 now, but now another majestic fish is abused.
This isn't a big box fish store bashing thread.....as i personally believe they are a necessary evil, but I just couldn't leave the darn fish there.

It was in with a BUNCH of Jewel cichlids at least twice the size, just getting hammered. It was beat into a corner, barely any fin left on the right side of the poor guy.

Now, $24.99+tax later, I have a Frontosa in my Dat grow out tank.

Can these fish grow out together? I have 2 IT that are pretty small. The Front will grow slow like the Dats, correct?? Even though it is smaller than the Dats...they seem scared of it.

They will get used to the tank mates, as long as the mates don't bully it. I had an 8 inch Front getting bullied by a 2 inch JD. I was thinking that the JD would be food but it would flare its gills and chase the much bigger fish. I had to pull out the JD and trade it in at the LFS.

Fronts will still compete for food and you can expect it to get between 4-6 inch in a year.
 
Fronts grow painfully slow IME. It should be okay growing with them. They are anything but agressive. Maybe get a couple more and give him lots of caves.
 
The fronts grow slow and then burst with growth and slow down again to crawl in growth .. take a year or two or three to mature..i do not know about Dats so i cannot help with the mixture and how it will be long term but i am happy you rescued the little guy.. post a pic of him if you can..
 
Should be an alright mix. Keep water clean and give them sand. They'll grow a bit faster. I've had good growth rates when feeding HBH super cichlid sinkers. They'll also clean up after the dats.

The only problem with rescuing the front from petsmart is that it's just a sale for them. Hopefully this is a limited time thing.
 
Not a limited time thing. It's become a standard.
 
They carried "trimacs" around here for a while..........didn't last long.
 
I have my Fronts in with my Dats. They are all pretty mello. The mix will be fine IMO. Just keep the water quality good and feed well.
