"Michelin reports approximately 535 fatalities and 23,000 collisions per year due to a tire blowout." http://www.policedriving.com/blowouts.htm
That's only 1 tire company! I wonder how many happen total.
Here's the story; I was driving to this LFS and didn't realize it was closed on sundays, so I decided to hit up one I rarely get to go to in a different town.
I was pressed for time so I was hitting 75mph and them BAM my drivers side front wheel blew.
I've known for a while now that I have needed to get new tires, but I put it off like a moron.
What surprised me was that I was thinking about my tire blowing all day today, so I felt 'ready' when it happened and I didn't freak-out I just kept going, gave a quick check on traffic (luckily not many cars around me).
I had to merge across 4 lines and even then I stopped at a divider between an on ramp and the freeway. There was a curb to that divider and sparks were flying everywhere when the rim hit the concrete, and I just stopped the care right in front of a sign.
I'm getting new tires tomorrow, and I'll never neglect my tires again. Hopefully someone reads this, checks their tires, and saves themselves a headache or a life.
I'm just extremely happy that the damage was minimal, the plastic wheel-well shield was ripped out, and my friend and I made it out okay.
I will be sure not to buy from this place:
