I think I have a true Red Terror!

I'm looking at quattroalt's pics in my "sexing Red Terrors when small" thread and the first pic sure looks like my fish!

I'm still not 100% sure because the fish is really small, like an inch. The spot looks big, but it is not oval and doesn't go all the way down the caudal peduncle. Also the fish looks grey-pink.

I'm thinking it's a male, though because now that it is settled in I can see some spangeling on it. I'm looking at the bars and trying to make out the "Y", but the fish is just too small for me to tell. Plus it is still stressed, so the color isn't all there yet.

I'm going back into town tomorrow and buying two more, just to up the chance of getting a female. I think I'll be able to tell for sure in two or three weeks just exactly what fish I have.

Oh, and the guy at the pet store gave it too me at his price ($3.75!) because it might not be the real thing and I've waited so long for them:D

I'll put up a pic tommorrow. I actually bought a camera today but have to bring it back because it doesn't work (that's another story posted on the Pleco board:swear: )
 
They have more elongated snout than a mayan, not upturned at all. Both lips point forwards.

And the spot is in the upper half just before the tail. The first few bars also form a Y, and the stripes go down the bottom, and they also have a horizontal line of blocks sometimes appear, like a loisellei.

IMO the difference is pretty clear between the 2.

I know I have a real red terror :D A male, he's my favourite cichlid.
 
YES! The snout is definitely pointing forward! Yep, the spot is in the upper area of the caudal peduncle. Still, I can't really make out all the bars, the fish will probably look better tomorrow and then I should be able to tell.

But it's looking pretty good that I've got a red terror!
 
the first time it turns on its war colors, you'll notice the y bar right away.
 
newtothis - they are brilliant fish. I got mine at a similar size to yours a few months ago, just over an inch. He's now 3 inches and just a superb fish. Very active, hungry, funny, mischievous etc.
