Well the Gar idea didnt workout.... someone will be picking him up tomorrow (he is currently living in my sump).

I think I have found a new friend w/teeth for my pred community tank. I picked this guy up today, I think it is a Red Tail Payara\Armatus unless they are 2 different fish???

anyways I dont think it is a scomb atleast I hope not, since I have heard they die for no reason. So here are a few pics so I can get a good ID from the Pros...

after some reading on here I think it is a TaT aka Red Tail Payara.... which maxes around 12"s if I remember what I have read.

sweet!

Yep thats a red allright. I have 3 and they usually lighten up when stressed and they will darken and become more reddish over time. Yours looks great, no fin tears, the eyes are fairly clear. I think they get bigger than 12'' but they do grow slowly, maybe 1/8'' a month or less.nice pick up:headbang2---------------The only question is will that larger Dat beat up on the red. And will they let him eat.

no my dats are cool, when he first went in after the drip they checked him out now he is left a lone. also the big guy has 9 other dats to pick on and doesnt bother with my pbass or other fish. the pbass is the same size as the red tail...

also I got the max size from the care guild in the sticky on this forum. they had another one there but he had a messed up tail but I didnt really want that because I kinda like show quality fish since it is a 220 and takes up my living room (mean all eyes are on it).

quick pic of my pbass....

it is a tat.
armatus and tats are different.
tats do get bigger than 12" ive seen 18" biggest.

thanks, he is in my 220 so size shouldnt be an issuse as my plan is once the fish get bigger I will pick my faves and thin out my stock. he could also be an excuse to get a bigger tank. :D

i would suggest going back to your lfs and getting the other one as well. I had my first one for a year before i got the other 2 and they are a totally different fish when in a school. They get alot of attitude in a school. But by them selves they are always hiding and skittish. If the other has some problems then quarantine it for a few weeks in a hospital tank and get it back good again. You will be glad you did.
