Alright, so I had 2 tanks, 1 had a male betta, and one had a female betta. The male was happy, enjoyed spending his days building large (1/4-1/2 inch thick, 2-3 inches to a side) bubble nests, and the female spent her day plumping up.
They both enjoyed freeze dried blood worms, betta bites, and live fruit flies.
I lowered the water in the female tank, and placed her in a tube made out of a 2-liter bottle with the ends cut off. The tank has a sponge filter, lightly decorated with face plants, and bare bottom. It also has a small plastic plate floating upside down, and 1/2 a 1-liter bottle taped to the side to provide nesting locations.
After a few days, I placed the male in her tank. He enjoys flaring for her, and swimming in circles around her tube. She flares her fins (but not gills) and swims in circles next to him, and does not seem afraid anymore.
Occasionally, he swims off, and comes back. During the times he does this, *she* has managed to construct a decent sized bubble nest. Not huge, but impressive -- especially since he has made nothing, and she never made one before this.
Any advice on how to trigger him to build?
