I got my MBU about 8 months ago at 4" and had him in a 60 gallon. It had a AC70, a Fluval 305, a FBF 300, and a 40 gallon sump/ snail breeder. I was doing 5 gallon water changes every other day. Every time I checked the tank the parameters were perfect. 0 nitrate, nitrite, amonia. PH 7.2. He has always had a bit of one cloudy eye. I treated the tank for ick and with primaflex and melaflex, and his eye never seemed to clear up. He is now about 6" long and started buring himself in the sand last week and looking stressed so over the weekend I moved him over to his 240 community tank. The parameters are still the same as his 60, but he still can't seem to hunt his food right. I feed him snails and market shrimp and he is very happy with his new living space but every time he goes to hunt something he strikes at it and misses. His one eye is still just slighty cloudy like it always has been. Is there a chance he is blind and just hunting off smell.

Has it ever been cleared of parasites?

Most all wild caught fish come in with parasites and may cause problems simular to what you have here.

If not put it back in the 60g and treat with jungle labs parasite clear or prazi pro for a week.

I feed my fahaka live crabs and cray fish twice weekly so it gets a parasite treatment yearly even if it does not show any signs.

Because alot of parasites do not show signs for a long time.

They don't seem to have the best vision in the world. Sometimes I wave shrimp in front of mine and it takes him a couple of seconds to focus in on it. Something may be wrong though if he has only grown 2" in 8 months. He is just a baby at 4-6" so he may require more frequent feedings. Good luck.

yea I have stepped up his feedings to every other day, hoping he will grow more in his big tank. I found out from the LFS after I bought him he was in a 20g for a year before I bought him, so I am afraid he may just be severely stunted fish.

Melafix should help with his eyes.

When I picked up mine I also was worried that perhaps he was stunted. One of his previous owners lacked knowledge on how to take care of him properly and kept him in poor conditions. I started feeding him twice daily and he has grown 3.5" in the last 5 months (from 12.5" to 16").

That's great growth. Are you soaking his foods in vitamins?

Try that then.
