I have an oscar that was unlucky...something in my tank broke my glass thermonter..and since I didn't notice it I didn't take it out in time..and one morning I woke up to find my oscar with a big gash on his head from where he got cut...which now looks pretty infect and gross...any suggestions...

I would not waste my time with melafix at this point. Turn down the temp to 75-78 to slow the infection. If you can QT him and use a real antibiotic you will improve his chances dramatically, use kanamyacin or maracyn-2. Furan-2 or bi-furan is a good antibiotic to use if you cannot QT as it will not totally kill your bio filter. You can also use salt while you are treating with the antibiotics. Keep the water pristine by doing large daily water changes and replacing the meds removed.
There are two schools of thought on meds personally i dont use them and find stress coat and melafix and salt enough to clean up injuries in days.I belive the same as us humans that the over use of anti biotics lowers overall immune sys in the long run so should be used as a last resort. A gash is one thing and half a head hanging off is another. Clean water is probably the best over all cure
