i have a motoro ray i dont thank i will use th rain guter or the lava rock im trying to figure oout what kind of rock i wana use maybe granit there is a abundunce of it here in utah but the gluing the rocks to somthing im kinda thinking plexiglass or somthing im not realy sure yet so its hard to say im going to put some thought into it i know i dont want to buy a aqua terra backround they cost a lot of money any one know if there is a rock that will buffer ph down
 
If you want to buffer your pH down, use driftwood. Rocks will pretty much only raise your pH.

To the OP, I would say if you use the gutter idea, make sure to use the plastic gutters, as the metal ones will corrode and rust over time.
 
Cool idea. I wonder if running the gutters vertical instead of horizontal would help it stay cleaner in the caves ?
 
You might also use eggcrate for dividers instead of a solid material, as the eggcrate would allow water to flow through the gutter/caves easier, keeping it cleaner.
