I was doing a water change this morning on my tank. I have a huge Bio-load so i do a 20% every other day and have had no problems. Well I was putting water back in with the filters turned off because the water level was to low to have them running. Well he just sank! all the way to the bottom on his side. he is a 5 inch silver BTW. so i immediately turned the filters on the canister was fine running but the HOB was not getting much water and i thought it was going to burn up but i dont care i would rather lose a $40 filter than my Aero. so i started dissolving salt into my next bucket of water as fast as i could and got the tank filled back up. (filter is fine) and he was swimming around again but acting really odd so i hit the LFS for an air pump and air stone that i have been putting off buying for some time now and when i got back he seems fine. Just like nothing happened. So i got the air stone running and i think all is well. Did i just lose oxygen in the water really fast? or is there some other explanation? I am very new to this hobby did I do everything right?

is it a new arowana?if it is it might be stress,if not possibly stress too

how big is your tank? 20% every other day is unnecessary

and when you say heavily stocked, exactly how many fish in what size tank. all these factor in. 5" aro* are very sensitive and the every other day changes may be stressing him out.

Not necessarily. It all depends on how big your bioload is, how good your filtration is, and how big your tank is. If you think 20% every other day is unnecessary, check out those discus finatics. I met one who literally does 100% EVERY day, not every other day.

I have a 20 gal long with 2 baby RTC's(both 5") i do 25% water changes daily, and sometimes it gets done twice a day(by accident if my son does it with out me knowing)my cats have healed up petty nicely from Gill curl,so i cant see how it could hurt a small Aro.

wow..I would start looking into getting a way bigger tank soon as you can if you dont have one already.. those RTC and Silver arow are gonna bust right through the tank in a few month or so!! lol...good luck...and im glad the arow is doing fine!!

i think you forgot to read the second part of my question. if its a 400gal tank, changing 20 percent would be unnecessary every other day

if its a 10gal tank, every other day i can see happening, but then again how can you heavily stock a tank so small. so my question was pretty direct for a reason.

if i think something is unnecessary thats just my opinion. i change water once every few months. on my leichardti tank, the bio load is so small n filtration is so over kill i do a water change once every 6 months. this is just how i do hings, and have been for 14yrs now

Well he said he has a hug bioload, and I highly doubt he has a 400 gallon tank. I have no clue how you maintain water levels that way, but whatever works for you.
