I have a female bp/texas hybrid and a carpintis male that kind of hang out together. The female shows more attention to the male then he does her. So yesterday her tube was dropped and she started to lay the eggs... Most of the eggs weren't sticking to the pot. Not sure why not but she is almost 3 and the last spawn she had was about a year and a half ago(so that might have something to do with it). Now here's the problem... While she was trying to spawn he would bite hard at her breeding tube sending eggs everywhere, push her out of the pot she was trying to lay in, and then he started eating the few eggs off of the pot that she actually got to stick.
I noticed her tube out earlier in the day so I decided not to feed. So yeah he might have been hungry but one would think the desire to breed would over ride that. I plan to let them try again but seeing this made me think he doesn't accept her, even though they have never lip locked nor do they fight. I am not new to fish breeding but this is the first time I have seen this happen "durring" a spawn and wondered if it has happened to anyone else?

just my opinion, sound like she is trying and he is not, I would put a divider for her safety.

Thanks for responding. They are within this 90 community tank... http://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&persist_app=1&v=AByyg5OydE0.
They have only been together for about 3 weeks now. They have never showed aggresion towards each other and as you can see she has many places to run and hide if needed. No split fins or lip locking has taken place. She has always showed him more attention than he pays her but I thought when it came to spawning that would change. I guess we'll see what happens next spawn.
I have a 75 that I will clear out for them... I'll be sure to keep a divider handy because I'm not sure he's feeling her. The main thing that made me start this thread was how he would bite her on her tube and send eggs everywhere... I figured if he didn't like her he would bite her. Lol

Very nice job

Thank you but I haven't done nothing yet lol. I need to get a spawn out of the big carpintis and the faded bp/texas. She struts her stuff in front of him but he pays her no attention(which is better than aggressive attention lol). I'm leaving them within this setup for one more attempt because they are most dominant so its no stress for them to spawn. Hopefully he comes around next time she tries to drop them eggs.

Well he wasn't hungry this time so they officially are not a pair. He did the same thing to her again... He would barely let her lay the eggs, then he push her out the pot and would go right behind her and eat them off the pot. He has never fanned her or acted like he even likes her, he just wasn't aggressive towards her and she would follow him around. Hell he showed the most aggression during the 2 spawns.
Although all this has happened... He does like a fish within the waters. Its my lil 3 in carpintis female from my carpintis pair thread. I don't want anymore carpintis so I'll have to wait till something else catches his eye... But I WILL get some offspring from this dude! Lol
