"swimming turds" LOL

very cool. I thought bichirs breathed with the help of their swim bladder too? what are those external gill/lungs for btw? even more extra oxygen?

Bichirs do not breath with swim bladder. Bichirs have lungs which is connected to the spiracles. They exhale and inhale through spiracle when they go up for air. The external gills are use by juveniles so they can stay underwater without gulping air as a self defense. If they continue to up for air every 15-30 min a predator will spot them.
