I used the Gar I.D. site, but still was unsure about the i.d. about this gar. I purchased this as a short nose gar from TFDfish.com and am waiting on delivery. I was hoping you guys could help with the i.d. I would really appreciate it thanx.

Shortnose. ;)

Still appreciate the help so thank you. I've recently read they're hard to keep, tendency to freak out and break their backs. Figured I'd still give it a go. I've had luck with fish that were supposed to be hard to maintain and had luck. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

TFD is good with their gar ID's for the most part (florida/spotted notwithstanding). They sell genuine shortnoses, I have purchased these gars from them on multiple occasions and they haven't let me down yet.

And yes, as long as they have a lot of room and you are constantly keeping them fed (also be more mindful of tankmates than with other juvi gars) they should make it past their fragile stages... still spook easily when bigger but if your lid is tight they should make it.

Thanx for the help and suggestions. I'm not into aggressive or darty fish so I'm hoping he'll be good with his tankmates. I've got a Florida Gar, Red Hook, Black Barred and Spotted Silver Dollars and 2 Armatus. Despite what's been said about Arm's and aggression I've personally haven't seen it. They're around 7-8 inches now and don't do anything except try to take a bite out of each other once in awhile. Totally leave everyone else alone. Though initially the Short Nose will be going into a grow out till they hit like 8-10 inches with a Tarpon whose also growing out.

if you're not into darty or aggressive fish then shortnose gars are definately not for you. they are among the most skittish gars, and are known to be extremely unpredictable with regards to their aggression levels.

as it is, those characins are poor tankmates for gar, and while you might get away with mixing florida gars with those tankmates, your chances for success are much lower when it comes to shortnose gars. the tarpon is possibly the worst tankmate for shortnose gars in among all the fish mentioned above.

if you were serious about housing these fishes well, it's suggested that you keep them in their own tank and under conditions that would benefit them. both groups of fishes require very different, specific living conditions and ultimately should not be thrown into mixed or community tanks, even if sometimes it "works". this is especially so since we're dealing with some of the more challenging species, ie; shortnose gars & armatus.

hope this helps you make a better informed decision.

It's too bad I wanted to try Scomberoides again had a 10 incher make it to 1 and a half years. Grew slowly I'm assuming since he was in an unheated tank and I live in New York. Died by sudden puffer syndrome my Congo puffer bit his face off. Had to put them temporarily together due to a leaking tank and paid the ultimate price.
