I have two tanks to choose from.

Which would best suit two fancy golfish?

Tank 1 : PetsMart - 40x12x18

Tank 2 : PetCo - 48x13x24

I want to get the PetsMart one... do you think it'll work?

It's 55 gallons.

And I heard it's best to keep them in pairs... will two different kinds of fancy goldfish play with each other?

Like one fancy and one red top?

Goldfish need about 10 gallons per fish, so if they are both around the 50 gallon mark any should be fine.

Keeping one is fine. What strain of goldfish do you plan to keep? Most fancy goldfish can reach 8 inches in length. You'd certainly want to avoid comets and shubunkins as these are more feisty and larger in size.

The red top is often called redcap. It's a pretty one. A 55g can allow 3-4 fancy goldies only.

Are you sure I can't get the first tank? It's a awesome deal... I only plan on keeping two fancies.

Also, I heard that they don't need heaters and like colder temperatures... Will it be okay if I don't use a heater?

My house at night is around 60 degrees all throughout morning. Then in the afternoon, it hits about 72 degrees...

Will the temp fluctuations harm/stress the goldfish?

Would I be better off buying 2 males, 2 females, or one male and one female?

_____

Also, can anyone suggest what type of filtration I should use with 2 fancy goldfish?

I prefer bigger tanks.lol It's up to you though. If it's a good deal, go for it. Goldfish don't need heaters as they indeed prefer cooler waters. As long as the temperature changes gradually, it shouldn't be a problem.

It's very difficult to determine the gender of the goldfish. The only time it will help is when they are in spawning conditions wherein males develop tubercles around their gills whiel females grow rounder as they are filled with roe.

I think both tank would be fine, either one, but I agree with Lupin...bigger tank would be better and easier on the bioload. I find that keeping the temperature for Fancy Goldfish at 72F-75F seems to make them happier. Years of trying to keep Fancy Goldfish has taught me that. I used to keep them without a heater, but every winter they would die when the water went under 70F.
