Hi, I am new here and finally i've figured out how to make a thread. In about a year or more i will have a 3 meter long, 2 meter wide, 1 meter high tank. I want to keep a dorado but i don't know **** about fishkeeping as my dad takes care of my fish when i keep them. Can you people suggest a begginer predatory fish to keep before i am ready for a dorado?

What do you mean by your dad takes care of your fish? Does he do all the water changes and maintenance on the tank. As for a begginer predatory fish it depends on the size of the tank you have now. Maybe a needle nose gar or rocket gar as a starter to predatory fish but really you need to be able to maintain your tanks by yourself

Yes

he does the water changes and maintenance. I will need to learn that as i will may be on my own. Really a needlenose ? No experience with those. As with rocket gar i've had experience with one and it wouldn't eat

It's great to have plans and dreams, as long as you temper them with realistic expectations. The aquarium you have in mind is no small undertaking. For starters, you should plan on owning your own home first, because no landlord is going to allow a 1200+ gallon tank on their premises.

For now, I suggest a small school of Exodon paradoxus (Bucktooth tetra) in a 48 gallon long (minimum size). After that, maybe a Brycon dentex (Sabalo Barracuda) in a 180?

Ah i see.... I actually have a choice of pond or tank of the same size, and btw i can do a brycon as well if dorados are unavailable

How about SD. Don't kill eachother generally, hardy, and active.
