I am interested in doing a 40gal tank can any types of gars be comfortable in that size? let me know the different types that you thing might or might not work. also if it is and the smaller size how many to the tank a single or a few? Can I feed them live fish and what is the water conditions they need to be kept in temp. ph, salted any info would be great. Where can I get them. or might want a barracuda let me know what else might be cool for that size tank

You could try a hujeta gar, not a true gar but still pretty cool though. Yes they will eat feeders but you always run the risk of introducing disease.

40 gal would be to small for gars and false gars. a needle fish would probably do well in a 40 but i dont have exp keeping them. but if you do invest in a bigger tank, id go with african pikes :D

Hujetas would not work in a 40. They are very flighty and sooner or later they will receive damage fromhitting the tanks sides.

Needle fish will not work because they are also lightning quick and are naturally a open water predator. My last needle grew to 14" before dying. 14" anything to big for a 40.

There are a few species of barracuda that could spen there life comfortably in a 40g.I can't think of there names right now, maybe minimus and isrealia which both max out at 4-5", But the chances of you finding them are very very slim.

My suggestion for a aggressive natural live eating predator for a 40g would be exodon tetra's or a single piranha like a red belly. With exodons you could get as many as your heart and maintenance schedule desires. 10 being the minimum number IMO. And 100 being max IMO.

125 would do for life. 6ft x 18" ----IMO

A 125 - 6" x 18" would work -they also make a 120 that's 4' x 2' x 2' that would give them more turning room as adults - Hujetas do better in groups of 3 or more. Check out the Stripped or Spotted Pike Characins too they have more color.
