I've got one IT around 7", had it for about two years now and I'm kicking myself for not buying a group of them! I'm growing out three small ornate bichirs (around 8cm) to go in a bigger tank [not sure how big yet] with the dat, 18" fire eel, and the big ornate I already have. I'm thinking of getting a group of smaller dats to grow out with the ornates, as the LFS's only have them around 4-6cm.
I know they're slow, but how big should I wait for them to get before introducing them to the large one? What would be a good number to grow out? I'm guessing 3 would be the minimum.
Any other tips/advice on mixing dats of different sizes?

Cheers

ive got to small ones at the moment ay one always pick on the other gona get two more soon

should cut the agression down ay

Haha, we all want more dats! The cool things about dats is that it wont eat or kill a small dat. But I do recommend that you grab a bunch and raise them together. In large numbers your dats will show less aggression and will school with each other.

So really I just have to wait until the smaller dats won't be eaten by the ornate?
I'd better start talking nicely to my other half, she's not so keen on the idea.... :screwy:

no matter the size difference? i have a 5" thinbar i wanna add my indo thats about 2.5-3". any problem with that?

That will be fine, I have heard of alot of stories of dats getting along that were different in size by alot more then that

Now this is the norm only, every situation is different, keep your eye on them when they are first put together but my guess is that will be fine.

Yep watch them for a while and all should be ok.
