in convicts...does the male usually have a bump on its head....how do u tekll male from female...please

Yes the male has a hump, if he is of size to have one. they develop them after a while.. But if you have one with a hump this is a male.. the female while have orange color in the abdomen and probably other places.. And will not get as big as males..

Here is a pic of two juviniles mating.. The female has allot more color and this will always be the case. Males are not half as colorful as females in this specie.

Notice the hump is starting to develop on the male..Right side and the colors of the female left side.

This male has a long way to go before he is full grown, the female is pretty much done growing at this size..

breeding is pretty easy, as long as they pair up, be expecting fry atleast twice a month (i've even had 3 spawns in one month, although second batch ended up eating the third batch eggs) don't forget to move the fry when they start free swimming, to avoid this. parents were excellent caretakers, often moving larger fry away from eggs by swalling them and spitting them out away from the eggs. most male cics have longer/sharper fins, then females.

so put two in water. ;)

I was always told if you wanna breed convicts, to take a male and a female and add water!

Most importantly, you might wanna find a lfs that will take in the newborns that you will have, it gets hard to get rid of 20-30 convicts every month, lol. Its also a great way to make feederfish for larger carnivors.

yeah, you'll hafta get something to handle the fry. maybe another larger cichlid? ive tried to get rid of fry to lfs but interest is mild. its likely they got a breeding pair or two instore already.

the female will have red on her stomach

its very easy for convicts to breed. in fact, i have some which are 1.5 cm. in size, around 50 pcs. in a separate tank and theres another batch which is still with theirs parents. i have to find an LFS soon who will accept convict juvies.....

As mentioned you'll need a plan for the spawn. My convicts breed like clock work and are keeping 7 altolamp.calvus's fat and happy:D . The current spawn (started w/ 200-now only 100+ left) is being herded around in half my 180 gal. The predetory cichlids (venustus, pseudo crabo and green terror/saums) are kept mostly in the other half.

The parents keep the other fish away from the fry- but can't stop my net!
