I'm interested in doing a setup for a matamata. I've kept fish for years but never turtles so I have a bunch of questions.

1) Does the tank have to be fully cylced before housing the matamata or is that not necessary?

2) I was planning on having driftwood in the enclosure along with pete granules in a filterbag directly in the tank to lower the pH. The pH out the tap in my house is around 8.2! When you do water changes do you use aged water with lowered pH or do you just fill directly from the tap and the driftwood and pete will drop the pH quick enough to not shock the matamata?

3) I do know how large these turtles can get and am willing to set up a huge stock pond or maybe even a monster tank when the time comes. That being said how fast do these turtles even grow? For those that keep these guys what is their growth rate like if provided clean water and given quality food? If I get one that is about 5" shell diamter how long can it be kept in a 55 gallon?

4) I currently have a pair of breeding convicts that breed like clockwork so I will be using the fry for feeding but I also plan on providing other foods as well. I know that matamatas can be trained to take dead fish like smelt or what not but what about pellets or foodsticks? Anyone have any luck feeding dried foods?

5) Last I know these guys dont bask like other turtles so does that mean a UV light is not needed at all?

I've been really interested in keeping one and am almost ready to pull the trigger and get one but I'm trying to learn everything I need to know before hand. Thanks in advance!

I always think the same thing... I just think "So not one of you could come up with something to say....?"

I don't know a whole lot about these guys, I'll wait for Chris to chime in.

i keep a few diffrent species of turtles, but have not owend a matamata yet but am thinking about getting one also, from the resherch ive read i think a healthy matamata should have no problem handling the slight ph changes from water changes. keeping the water clean would be more of a concern to me then the ph and feeding them convits probly wont be the best with how fast they are and how slow the matas are traning them to take frozen fish shouldnt be tryed intill your turtle is healty eating and comftabole in its new home ive only herd of a few cases of them eating pellets and they were all older turtles with shells over a foot long i would still pervide them with uv light personaly especialy younger mata turtles as they will still bask

yea convicts wont be the staple diet as i only have one pair and fry dont grow fast enough. just thought it could be a way to cull the convicts and feed a pet at the same time. i live walking distance to a bait shop so feeding live shouldnt be a problem for me. i'm sure i can get it to eat frozen foods after the turtle's been assimilated and has been eating good and also is comfortable in his new home.

Guppies and platies might be better but realisitcally depending on fish size saturate the tank with some young fry and he'll probably get what he needs. From what I understand they can't chew so you really want to keep the feeders so he can easily swallow them whole. If he has to eat 10 or more fish to fill up and not choke then thats fine so maybe you don't have to wait for the fry to "grow up" and can dump them in soon as you got them eating flake regularly.

id be warry of feeding them sick fish like alot of feeder gold fish are ive herd storys of them getting sick from gold fish and they will stop eating gold fish all togehter
