I want to take the top brace off

What are the dimensions of your tank. I have a 20G long and it does not have any center braces. Are you talking about the brace in the middle of the tank or the wood trim around the edges.

Don't do it! The braces are used for tank integrity.

Definitely do NOT do it. When I was a kid I took the center brace off of a tank...it lasted around 2-3 hrs and boom--blown out tank and water everywhere.

People do it all the time with ten gallons....not sure about 20 gallons.

If glass is 1/4" thick it should be fine. At a foot high the pressure isn't too great.
