... i went to petsmart to buy some fish food... and what do i see when i look at the tanks?

the most beautiful lil flowerhorn with pearling already starting and a beginning of a kok... ( now i understand you may not be into hybrids)... but like it was so terrible to see it labeled as a jack dempsey....

the reason i didnt buy it was because int he back of my mind i knew i didnt have the tank to keep it... i would only be able to keep it for a year or so in my 30 and then i would have to sell it to my LFS... but it really was a shame

less than a year in a 30g. Still, wise decision. Never buy fish with plans of returning them

I give you credit for not giving in and buying a fish you couldn't care for properly over the long haul. More fish keepers should follow this way of thinking.

Congrats for not being tempted by the fish gods. I woulda went home and thought of every way possible of me getting it, but i'm a lil:screwy:

keep in mind, my biggest flowerhorn was the biggest of the spawn, and grew from 4" to a solid 8" in 3months

Well OK, never buy a fish with the plans of returning it - I agree on principle, but you DO know that they are going to sell that poor "JD" to someone with a 15 gallon starter kit instead.

Sometimes choosing "bad" over "worse" isn't such a bad thing.

And yeah I know the whole argument that buying it is supporting that chain, and simply reinforces the continuation of the practice, blah blah blah. I'm just sayin'. Cuz I've rationalized buying a couple of fish that way... I have always found a way to house them properly though.

You showed great restraint. I was in Petsmart today and they had one 3" flowerhorn labelled as a three spot cichlid, sharing a tank with a snook. It was reduced to $2. Very tempting since it had decent coloration.

Have you considered large plastic tub if a tank isnt good for you for now.
Walmart sells some large clear plastic types. I used them to transport my fish from NY when I drove here . Just keep water in them a few days before than dump it just incase any chemicals but I never had a problem with them.

I prefer them over tanks in my patio "fish room" . Granted for indoors a tank is just cleaer and nicer but for temp housing they work well
