I will never buy from petco or any other chain pet store ever again. I recently bought a small common pleco from petco and since then my tank as absoutly crashed. the readings in the tank are still 0/0/0 but 2 angels have died in the last two weeks. The second one to die had clear signs of fin rot. Nothing has changed in the tank excpet the introduction of this pleco and from everything i can tell the pleco brought disease into the tank. If anyone has any idea of anything i can do to save me two remaining angels please tell me.

What test kit are you using? I was under the impression your ammonia should spike if your tank hasn't cycled and nitrates up to dangerous levels if it were.

I came to that conclusion a couple years ago. In fact, my walmart just figured that out too. They got rid of their live fish section! I drive 1.5 hours to a pet store in a different state because I know they take care of their fish. I usually stop when go back to Illinois, which I will be doing this weekend. Find a pet store you trust and stick with them!

the tank has been up and running for almost 4 years it has defitnaly cycled

You have 0 nitrAtes? That's hard to accomplish in any tank, never mind a tank with a poop machine pleco. I'd re-test with a different kit.

maybe he has a butt load of plants and does twice daily water changes.

at any rate most employees at chain stores dont know fish.
one guy even tried to tell me an electric blue johanni was capable of giving a painful shock:screwy: .

sorry to hear about your loss.

Yeah I am pretty sketchy when it comes to petsmart also, the one near my house has a quality freshwater team there, but petco and petsmart in general i am not a fan of.

Dont buy fish from those places,it rarely works out well.Try to find a lfs to go to,for a few cents more its worth it.

Too save your angels, raise your temp to 86-88 degrees and treat with melafix and primafix to ward off any secondary infections.

I had this exact thing happen to me a couple years ago. After buying some rams from Petco. Seems there is a disease that only affects angel fish, here is a quote from the following link;

http://www.angelsplus.com/Care.htm

Angelfish Disease
The following are the diseases that most commonly infect angelfish.

Angelfish Virus
A Potentially deadly disease. It is highly infectious. All exposed angelfish that are not immune will come down with symptoms within 2-3 days of exposure, usually quicker. If you suspect that a quarantined fish has this, you should destroy the fish. The risk is too great to keep such a fish around. There is no medication for this virus. The fish's immune system must be relied upon for the cure. Symptoms: Clamped fins, excess slime, listless with nose pointed up slightly, usually towards the back of the aquarium. It has an approximately 3 week infectious period. This disease is so undesirable, because if an angelfish survives the virus, it will likely become a carrier for up to six months. This can put an angelfish breeding operation out of business very quickly. These symptoms can also be caused by other infectious diseases which may be secondary or tertiary infections, that are unrelated to the virus. The object is to keep the angelfish comfortable while giving the immune system time to kick in. Remove any bright lights from the aquarium and treat with an antibiotic to prevent secondary infections.

With the premention treatment for 2 weeks I was able to save 5 of my 7 angels. One other condition of the disease is it leaves the fish steril.

Sad thing is, I still go into this petco and all the angels show the signs of the sickness. My wife even wrote Petco a letter, they replied by saying Thank you for your concern, we will correct the problem. And that was almost 2 years ago:confused:

Good luck with your tank
